Rain Barrel making demonstration

Charles McClay from Wake County Lake Crabtree Park demonstrated how to make a 55 gallon rain barrel to start your own water conservation program at home. Thank you Charlie!

Walk With an Arborist

Folks had an opportunity to walk around Flower’s Field with an arborist and ask your questions about trees! Thank you Basil Camu, Fiona Matthews and Hayden Gould of Leaf & Limb for sharing your knowledge!

Growing Native Plants from Seed

Jeff Hawkinson shared the basics of growing native plants from seed. He explained two methods for growing plant and identified several types of common native plant seeds. He gave out some baby butterfly weed to some lucky festival attendees!

Tuscarora Nation

Dave from the Tuscarora Nation gave the tree dedication inspiring us to know our connection to nature.

About 60 volunteers carried these magnificent life size puppets parading through the festival leading everyone to the ceremonial tree planting and One Tribe helped us get into the rhythm of the celebration inviting people to participate in a drum circle.

Proper Tree Planting Demonstration

Basil Camu and Hayden Gould of Leaf & Limb showed us how to properly plant a tree so your new trees will thrive for generations. Thank you Basil and Hayden!

Why you should leave the leaves!

Mary Abrams from Wake Audubon shared the many benefits of leaving your leaves in your yard. Thank you Mary!


30 Environmental Educators

Environmental professionals shared their knowledge to help festival attendees build and expand their environmental sustainability toolbox.

65 volunteers worked behind the scenes to set up, keep the festival on task and clean up! Thank you for your time, passion and endless giving!

Trivia Game

To play the Raleigh Arbor Day Trivia Game, festival attendees scanned the Trivia Game QR code on their phone and attended the environmental demonstrations to learn the trivia answers.  9 participants giving the most correct answers claimed their prize:

This is a NC Sci Fest community event!

Founded in 2010, the North Carolina Science Festival is the first statewide science festival in the United States. Through a series of community-based events each April, the Festival celebrates the economic, educational, and cultural impacts of science in North Carolina.
